Spring 2008 into a huge, long parking lot. The further north we crept, the worse the wind and snow became until soon I had no idea where I was. I called my wife and told her I was going to be a while. As the evening wore on, I found ways to keep myself occupied. I reprogrammed all the presets on my radio, and then listened to music that I normally would avoid like the plague just to see if there was something there I had been missing (there wasn’t). I called my wife every half hour to let her know I was still alive. I called people I haven’t RWAU talked to in years just to say, “Hello, I’m bored out of my mind,” until a strange phenomenon started to occur—my cell phone wouldn’t work. I was puzzled by this for a while until I glanced around at all the cars around me—everyone in every car was on the cell phone trying to make a call—trying to tell a wife, husband, father or mother, “I’m going to be late. I’m going to be late to dinner, and maybe I’m going to be late for breakfast.” Four and a half hours after leaving the office I arrived home. Four and a half hours to drive what usually takes me 20 minutes on a bad day. My wife and cat were glad to see me, but not as glad as I was to see them. But, as spring begins to warm the Northern Hemisphere, all of you water system operators and managers are going to be thrilled. Reservoirs are going to fill, ground water tables will rise, and all will be right with the world. As you all enjoy the bounty of a wonderful snow filled winter, just remember—I have paid in blood, frozen sweat and icy tears for your joy.
