The Connector - Summer 2008 - (Page 13) RWAU Summer 2008 Rural Water News Each year the National Rural Water Association (NRWA) holds a rally in Washington DC. Representatives from state Rural Water associations and water systems from across the nation attend and gather together to discuss issues, hear from federal agencies and communicate with their congressional delegations. The rally also includes the National Water Taste Test where state winning waters compete against each other for the honor of being named best in the nation. The Rural Water Association of Utah (RWAU) has been an active participant in the Water Rally for many years. Those who attend include representatives from the system that won the Utah Water Taste Test so that they may compete in the national competition. This year’s rally began on April 21st with a general session at the Capitol Hill Hyatt Regency Hotel. Representatives from NRWA addressed those assembled on issues and funding that is of concern to small water and wastewater systems. Of particular import in 2008 are the impending Farm Bill and the need for inclusion of funding for Rural Water and rural water systems within that authorization legislation. Those attending the Rally from Utah met with members and staff of the Utah Congressional Delegation. As always, each member and office was informed of work done by RWAU during the previous year to assist Utah’s small water and wastewater systems. The need to continue federal funding to support those assistance programs was also discussed. Utah’s Congressional Delegation Members are long-term supporters of RWAU and NRWA. They have consistently signed letters supporting Rural Water programs and have supported the programs in Appropriation Committee hearings. RWAU and Utah’s small water and wastewater systems owe a debt of thanks to each Utah Senator and Congressman. The other feature of the meetings with the Utah Congressional Delegation is the opportunity for each of them to sample Utah’s Best Tasting Water. This year’s winner, the City of Oakley, was proud to present their water in the offices and to hear members of Congress sing its praises. This annual sampling of Utah’s water has turned into a much anticipated and the most enjoyable part of Utah’s Rally participation. 2008 Washington DC Water Rally Congressman Cannon Rural Water Northern Conference: Quality Water, Quality Life!
