Sewer Lateral Locating Issue By Leland Meyers, Central Davis Sewer District A lateral discussion group meeting was held on April 28th to discuss the issue of laterals and directional drilling safety. The meeting included representatives from industry, contractors, and public utilities. Also attending the meeting was Senator Scott Jenkins. Senator Jenkins is chair of the interim committee studying the lateral marking issue. At the meeting Senator Jenkins indicated that the lateral marking issue would also be discussed at the May interim committee meeting. The work group was presented a slide show which discussed the complexities of the issue. After the presentation the group discussed possible alternatives that could be acceptable for all present, including the need for safety, the need for cost efficiency, and the need for improved records. A draft Proposed Lateral Locate Law Changes was developed from the discussion. This is a talking paper and needs to be reviewed to determine which of the points are acceptable to the general wastewater community. Copies of the draft Proposed Lateral Locate Law Changes can be obtained by contacting either Leland Meyers at ljmyers@cdsewer.org or Terral Dunn, RWAU Wastewater Technician at dunn@rwau.net.
