Fall 2008 RWAU Bunny with Senator Bennett called by the wrong name, let alone a well known senator. My ability to put my large feet into my even larger mouth was not the impression I wanted to make. Not even close. My verbal suicide fortunately didn’t take up all the time we had out there and we were able to tour some of the many amazing sights that city has to offer. I thoroughly enjoyed going to the monuments, the museums, Arlington Cemetery and a few other places. The Vietnam Wall had some names inducted while we were there and family members of the fallen soldiers brought memorabilia to sit at the wall. Looking at the items was sobering; it made the names on the wall more real; I was able to view them more as the people they were rather than just a name on the wall. I gained a new respect for not only the service men and women in this war, but in every war. They give the ultimate sacrifice. Every spare second we had I was trying to see new and exciting things, but I know I still didn’t even scratch the surface. Washington DC is a city that I’ve seen depicted in hundreds of photographs. But what you can’t see or get from a photograph is the feeling you get while you are there. Everything from when our mighty nation was in its infancy to where we will grow is represented. The city is alive and exciting. During this time of $4 a gallon gas, a highly controversial war and the economy affecting everyone you meet, this was a trip I needed. I needed to see the work and dedication our congressmen and senators are putting in on our behalf. I needed to see the foundation on which we, as a nation, are built upon. I needed to see that even though we have our problems, we have something great that not very many people on this earth are lucky enough to be a part of. Whether I made the right impression on Utah’s legislative delegation, I’ll never know. But what I do know is that trip made an impression on me that I will never forget.
