The Connector - Fall 2008 - (Page 24) Fall 2008 RWAU Water Wise Utah Mary Dickson, KUED / Water Wise Utah tah is the nation’s second driest state with some of the highest water consumption in the country. Yet, water is a limited resource in the state, which only receives an average of 13 inches of rain a year. That’s why public broadcasters, libraries and museums have joined together to promote the need for water conservation under the umbrella “Water Wise Utah.” The project was designed to encourage Utahns to conserve the limited water resources in Utah. Five partnering organizations working on the project—KUED, UEN, KUER, The J. Willard Marriott Library and the Utah Museum of Natural History—will each promote the need for conservation. “As population and development in the state increases, so does the demand on our limited water supply,” says Lisa Cohne, project manager. “The partners of Water Wise Utah reached consensus regarding the importance of acting on this critical issue and have committed to action.” Using a wide variety of TV and radio programs, community events and exhibits, the partnership hopes to encourage Utahns—especially homeowners—to conserve water through small, thoughtful changes in lifestyle and activities. As part of the project, KUED and UEN-TV will broadcast five KUED local productions including Desert Wars: Water and the West; Glen Canyon: A Dam, Water and the West; A Desert Sea; Wild U River: The Colorado and River of Stone. Check your local listings for dates and broadcast times. UEN will also air educational water programming, including Water: The Drop of Life; Planet H2O; Water’s Journey: A River Return; and the Biology of Lakes, Ponds and Wetlands. Many of the programs as well as the KUED productions will be available for the public online through UEN’s Media Hub at www. waterwiseutah.org KUER radio will air public service announcements promoting related community events and special news reports on the issue. The Utah Museum of Natural History is host to a traveling exhibit entitled, “The Bear River—Last Chance to Change Course”. The photo exhibit with interactive components will travel to five targeted communities, including Salt Lake City, St. George, Draper, South Jordan and Ogden throughout the year. A major component of the project is an expansive web site, waterwiseutah.org, which includes tips on saving water at home, on the job, in the community and throughout the state; links to resources and information; activities for students and educators; a full list of community events; related news items; as well as ways to calculate your personal water usage. “Saving water creates a ripple effect,” says Cohne. “Small changes in personal habits add up to thousands of gallons saved. One person taking shorter showers can save more than 10,000 gallons a year. Installing low-flow fixtures also makes a significant different in individual water use.” Visit waterwiseutah.org to learn more. 2/8/08 5:07:32 PM http://www.waterwiseutah.org http://www.waterwiseutah.org http://www.waterwiseutah.org http://www.fordmeterbox.com http://www.waterwiseutah.org
