Petitioning Congress to enact better policies and laws is a fundamental civil liberty that our forefathers worked to guarantee to ensure a true representative democracy. Every member of Congress is important. Building relationships with individuals who just got elected or candidates who are running for office is important. You never know when an elected official will be in a position of power and influence in Congress. This was the case for my friend, U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge. From a county commissioner to a state representative to a state cabinet official, Etheridge is now serving his fifth term in the House of Representatives. Today, my old friend, who is intimately familiar with our state rural water association and my local water utility, is a senior member on important congressional committees and has become a leader in the House in the rural water movement and rural development. I look for ward to seeing all of you at our rally in Washington on April 20-22 at the Capital Hill Hyatt on New Jersey Avenue. If you have never attended the rally, please think about coming this year. If you are a regular, thank you for making this contribution each year. It is the hallmark of our annual campaign and critical to accomplishing our funding objectives. Each state rural water association brings member water systems to Washington to meet, brief and make presentations to its state’s congressional representatives. During the Capitol Hill presentations, each state’s rural water delegation discusses the details of its programs, the training, all the technical assistance provided, the benefit of source water protection, the burden of regulatory requirements on small communities and the need for financial assistance for local water projects. Over the last 230 years, we have lost thousands of American lives to keep it. In respect for those who came before us to develop and protect this right, it is only fitting that we continue to exercise our right to express what we believe!
