They are not afraid to make waves. The term “job security” is an oxymoron. They’re the ultimate risk takers. 9. Di sr espec t f u l . G e n Ye r s c r ave respect and will go to great lengths to get it, but when it comes to giving respect, they are stingy. To this group, just because a person is older or has an important position or title doesn’t mean he deserves automatic respect. This generation barters in this area, with the idea being, “You respect me first, then maybe I’ll respect you.” Respect has to be earned by this group. 10. Bluntly expressive. Mum is not the word with this group. They have been taught to speak their minds. This group has been told not to keep anything bottled up inside. They have also seen how being overtly verbal has led to fame and fortune for some. On the flip side, the virtues of courtesy, politeness, tact and diplomacy are on the endangered species list. This generation is going to share their own thoughts, ideas and opinions, and you are going to hear them. The downside is that sometimes it is perceived to be personal and negative and can come out at the worst times and in the worst places. 11. Tolerant. This generation is perceived to be “short-fused” in many areas. However, the majority of this group has rejected the prejudices handed down to them. This group ca n be i nc r ed ibly u nde r sta nding of other people’s experiences, even if they are radically different from their own. There is a refreshing spirit of openness with these individuals. This generation sees no barriers. 12. Com m it ted . T h i s gener at ion i s f iercely loyal to those individuals and institutions that believe in them. They are searching for a purpose, something to believe in and someone to believe in them. If they connect with a job that intrigues them and an employer that invites them to be a part of the family, they will be relentless foot soldiers for the team. The Nexters are not afraid of chaos and will not run at the sound of bad news. So, to employers or future employers of this generation, what does this say? How do we capitalize on these 12 character traits? In the workplace today, employers should: • Capita l i ze on t he gener at iona l talent for multitasking and time management; • Be on the lookout for new trends in training to feed their desire to learn new skills; • Include them in decision-making, process improvement innovative activities; • Harness their energy; • Listen to them, unleash their weird and wack y ways of look ing at things and appreciate their unconvent iona l approac h to solv i ng problems; • Give them goals to achieve that are mutually beneficial, with perks such as a cash bonus for finishing a project ahead of schedule or a twohour paid mini vacation at the end of the week; • Invest time in building rapport and getting to know this generation in your workplace; • Spread the good news when something good happens in the company; let them know they contributed to these successes; • Be specific about expectations, consequences and rules of the game; • Te l l t he t r ut h a nd ea r n t he i r respect; fight the urge to demand their respect; • Let them be heard and engage them in problem-solving; • Make them feel welcome and part of the team; • Ensure that they feel wanted, needed and cared for; and • Expect the best! >>20 18 • First 1 362938_Hungerford.inddQuarter ©2008 Hungerford & Terry, Inc. 200 12/28/07 10:30:24 AM
