Personal users may want to back up these types of data online: • Documents • Spreadsheets • Databases • Reports • Financial data • Resumes • Address book data • Photographs and videos • Internet bookmarks • E-mails Advantages of online backup • It can cost you less to set up and run than other options. • There is no hardware to buy, maintain or repair and no consumable media to manage. • Online backups can be made completely automatic, releasing time for more productive tasks. • It is simple to manage — all that is required is to turn it on. • There is no need to arrange for storage of media, either onsite or offsite. • There are no worries about media degrading or becoming obsolete. • All your backup files are available online, from anywhere in the world, at any time. • All your backup files are encrypted by your computer before sending and are stored in that format, ensuring a very high level of security. How do I get started? If you’re new to online data backup, you may not know what ﬁ les you should be backing up. The best way to evaluate this is to ask yourself: “If I lost this data today, would I miss it? Would my business be able to function without it?” Examine the types of ﬁ les you have on your system and categorize them into one of the following categories: • Most critical • Needed • Not needed Now, of that most critical data, try to determine how much space you will need in megabytes. Also, consider the various file types and formats. Some may be database information. Others may include e-mails and contact lists. It’s generally not necessary to backup program files or operating system files, unless you are only doing this ONCE for a master backup to safeguard in an offsite data storage facility. For ongoing backups, these types of files need not be backed up regularly. Once you’ve determined what to backup, consider how often your files change. This will help you determine an effective online backup schedule that works best for you. Now you are ready to backup and protect your data against anything!
