Rural Water - Quarter 3, 2008 - (Page 38) Whether the goal is protecting source water or making maintenance easier, new technology is helping to make the rural water supply safer and more efficient than ever. Easier installation attracts attention The Ford Meter Box Company has built a reputation for innovation, and they continue that tradition with several new products that will make installation and maintenance easier for rural water utilities and contractors. The UFR 1500 circle lock is available in sizes from 4˝ to 12˝, and it requires no field alterations to adapt from IPS PVC or C900 PVC pipe. Melanie Boyll, marketing manager for Ford Meter Box, says this is the key point. “A lot of the other products on the market require removing or adding something to make it compatible with the other type of pipe. Ours doesn’t. It’s universal between the two types of pipes, so users don’t have to stock two different restraints.” The product was released in fall 2007. Another new product – this one released in early 2008 – is a newly designed MJ gasket. The “So-EZ MJ Gland Snap-on Gasket” features a specially designed taper that allows connection to JPS PVC pipe, C900 PVC pipe, or Ductile Iron. With a lip that fits around the MJ gland, it holds proper alignment, keeping the gasket evenly spaced and compressed. Boyll says the company has heard great feedback. “We’ve had a tremendous response ever since its release. Our extraordinary design eliminates many installation problems that are typically experienced when making an MJ connection.” In addition to the ease of use, the product gets high marks for value. “One gasket for IPS PVC, C900 PVC or DI saves time and money [and] contractors and utilities just love it.” >>40 Water is our most precious resource MAKE EVERY DROP COUNT With the UFR (Unmeasured Flow Reducer) Unmeasured water ow accounts for up to 14% of household use, & unmeasured water is unbilled. The UFR captures low ow water and forces it through the meter in a way that causes nearly every drop to be registered by the meter. UFR installations can increase the measurement of billable water between as much as ve and ten percent.
