CUB SCOUTS Visit Alliance of Indiana Rural Water’s Spring Conference It has been estimated that almost 50 percent of today’s water and wastewater operators will retire within the next five to seven years. They’ll need to be replaced. Bruce Cunningham, Eagle Scout and former Alliance of Indiana Rural Water president, gives the Boy Scout handshake. From left to right: Michael Chamoun, Will Lillis, Rudy Dompke, Jordan Gommell and Patrick Mooney. Rear: Scott Dompke, Den Leader. A GROWING AND real concern in the water/wastewater industry is the need to attract new operators to replace the current workforce as they retire. One way we can address this concern is to promote our industry to the younger generations. Scott Dompke with GRW Engineers did just that when he invited his Cub Scout Pack to the Alliance of Indiana Rural Water’s spring conference. Dompke is the Den Leader to Pack 179 Den 8 from St. Charles School in Bloomington, Ind. The Cub Scouts toured the exhibit hall at the conference to “learn about the water business as part of the Reduce, Recycle and Reuse theme for the month,” said Dompke. They were able to meet and ask questions of experienced operators, engineers, equipment sales reps and other water professionals. The boys were able to get their hands on some of the equipment and learn how it works to bring safe drinking water to the faucets in their homes.
