Rural Water - Quarter 3, 2009 - (Page 11)

FROM THE PRESIDENT BY FRED SHELDON, NRWA PRESIDENT Trust “TRUST ME!” How many times in our lives have we heard that line? How many times has it proven to be a falsehood? Every day, we ask the public to trust us. In our business it’s important that people do trust us. Trust is simply “our word.” My dad always told us growing up, “People will know you by your word. When you say you’re going to do something, do it! You will ever only be as good as your word.” In other words, people need to trust you. Our customers trust us to do the things we say we’ll do. Whether it’s repairing something within our systems or going to Washington, D.C. to work in order to build better systems… people trust us to do what’s best for them, AND what’s right for them. They trust us to provide clean, safe, quality, affordable water 365-24-7. What a monumental challenge! What a humbling experience! They TRUST us to bring clean water into their homes. I don’t know about you, but I know my neighbors never even think about their water when they turn the faucet on. Their trust is so deeply ingrained in them that it never crosses their minds to question that trust. They simply KNOW their water is safe. In business, it’s important to keep your word, to extend that trust to others that we do business with. We trust suppliers to provide good equipment. We trust our state rural water associations to provide outstanding technical, managerial and fi nancial support to our utility membership. We trust our employees to provide an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay. Even in emergency response, trust rural water when you need help. Our currency doesn’t say “In God We Question Everything” – it simply says “In God We Trust.” Our founding fathers trusted each other to stand fi rm in what was right, what was just and what was godly. They trusted that God would lead them through the terrible times they were experiencing. Trust, we need now, as well. Trust, between associations, companies, customers, suppliers and yes, even politicians, is the only thing that will keep America going. It’s not just the right thing to do… it’s the ONLY thing to do. Rural Water is there for you. Trust me. ❍ Trust, between associations, companies, customers, suppliers and yes, even politicians, is the only thing that will keep America going. It’s not just the right thing to do… it’s the ONLY thing to do. Third Quarter 2009 • 11
