Rural Water - Quarter 4, 2008 - (Page 46) The Rural Water Social is a place where attendees see old friends and make new friends. 2008 NRWA INDUSTRY EVENT: The Winning Hand Was in OVER 2,200 RURAL water family members played the winning hand by attending the 2008 NRWA Industry Event in Reno, Nevada. The Grand Sierra Resort was filled with people for education, sharing, networking and fun. The NRWA Annual Conference is the time when members, exhibitors, sponsors and governmental officials can come together to discuss the industry’s top issues and work together to strengthen the rural water mission to others across the country. 46 • Fourth Quarter 2008 RENO! The conference kicked off to a terrific start Sunday evening with the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the Exhibit Hall by President Rodney Tart. Over 120 exhibitors put their “best foot” forward, welcoming everyone with new products and exciting services. The Sunday Opening Night, sponsored by Aquastore and HydraStop, was a tremendous success, with everyone reconnecting with old friends seen only once a year at this event and others meeting and networking for the very fi rst time. Rural water members are like a tight knit family coming together for their annual family reunion – sharing stories and laughter throughout the week. General sessions featured such things as a RUS Town Meeting, where the focus was on the resources available to rural and small communities; the transitioning of your board and how to plan for a utility board’s future; the decisions that local utility boards face, such as legal considerations, fi nances and even audits; the importance of background screening and more. The attendees were welcomed to Reno by Nevada National Director Dan Sweeney during the opening session on Monday, followed by an inspiring presentation by NRWA President Rodney Tart. A special guest, Dr. Gayle Kearns, warmed the audience with anecdotes and “tips” on how to manage the new generation. Tuesday morning’s general session featured Bob Farmer of Farmer’s Almanac, who entertained the audience with his humor, wit and motivational message.
