Wednesday brought about the fi nal day of the conference. The crowd was addressed by Benjamin Grumbles, assistant administrator, USEPA. NRWA CEO Rob Johnson delivered his conference closing remarks by thanking the attendees for facing the challenges of our world with dedication and perseverance, and for taking the lead in providing clean, safe, quality water for rural communities nationwide. The awards ceremony, celebrating the hard work and dedication of many state personnel and associations, honored those who have excelled in the past year. The evening culminated with the annual banquet and closing remarks by President Tart. Tart then “passed the gavel” to incoming President Fred Sheldon of Omak, Washington. Tart also presented the new president with his presidential ring and a bronzed cowboy hat, signifying Sheldon’s ties with the west. Tart warned Sheldon that it could be a “rough ride ahead,” but that with the help of the NRWA board of directors and staff, “we’ll try to make it a smooth ride.” The banquet was topped off by Deadwood Revival, a western/bluegrass group from Washington. Everyone left the banquet bidding farewell to friends and wishing them safe travels home. Plans were made to see each other again in Louisville, Kentucky, October 6-8, for the inaugural H2O-XPO! Let your heart race as you gather with your fellow rural water friends for what will soon become the largest utility conference/exhibition center in the nation! We’ll see you there!
