Stone, Sand and Gravel Review - September/October 2010 - (Page 7)

The bimonthly publication of the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association September/October 2010, Volume 26, Number 5 TABLE OF CONTENTS In This Issue: Sustainability is more than a buzzword these days (and, yes, the bee on the cover is there for a reason!). This month, we offer a look at suggestions and successes within the realm of sustainability. GZA GeoEnvironmental’s Wendy Schlett discusses how NSSGA’s Sustainability Task Force has developed guidance and tools to assist member companies in adapting to the changing climate that now incorporates sustainability into routine practices and explores the benefits of adapting to this new way of doing business. Andy Brookens of environmental consultants Skelly & Loy points out that while aggregate companies’ goals might seem to be at odds with the Endangered Species Act, there are proactive steps companies can take that will lead them into better compliance. As a case study for sustainability in action, the partnership between Hanson Aggregates West Region’s Santee Plant and Republic Services, Inc., is an ideal illustration of a team approach to sustainability. These companies provide services to each other and to the public, ultimately improving their bottom lines while reducing environmental impacts. Also in this issue is a timely look at what will likely drive voter choices in the November elections. NSSGA’s Vice President for Government Affairs Pam Whitted analyzes what has gone wrong in government over the past 20 months and outlines what could easily be a “Middle Class Revolt” in the voter booth. Additionally, through four op-ed pieces, we provide a forum for the Republican and Democratic parties to outline their driving forces and goals. It’s all good food for thought as we head to the polls in a few weeks. 13 SUSTAINABILITY IS MORE THAN JUST ANOTHER BUZZWORD The members of NSSGA identify sustainability as a business approach that integrates environmental stewardship, social responsibility and economic prosperity to ensure the longterm supply of aggregate materials to society. In this and future editions of SS&G REVIEW, Wendy Schlett of GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc., will explore concepts and practices to highlight the benefits of adapting to this new way of doing business. 15 NSSGA’S NEW ECONOMIC CALCULATOR MEASURES CONTRIBUTION TO LOCAL COMMUNITIES NSSGA’s new Economic Impact Sustainability Tool provides an easy, low-cost method of estimating an individual operation’s contribution to the local community and a guide to other tangible benefits that contribute to the local community. 19 CO-LOCATION PROVIDES ENVIRONMENTAL WIN FOR QUARRY OPERATIONS AND LANDFILL The Hanson Aggregates West Region’s Santee Plant provides an ideal illustration of a team approach to sustainability. Veteran industry writer Mary McCaig-Foster describes how the San Diego Landfill System’s Sycamore Landfill near Santee, Calif., and Hanson provide services to each other and to the public at large. 24 ACHIEVING AGGREGATES PROJECT GOALS WHILE ENSURING SPECIES CONSERVATION IS OF CONCERN The responsibility to conserve endangered and threatened species and the habitats that sustain them can be problematic during this challenging economic climate for the aggregates industry. Andy Brookens, Skelly and Loy, Inc., helps producers recognize the exposure of a project to liability under the ESA and accordingly emphasizes the significance of the due diligence process for environmental resources. 28 WILL THERE BE A MIDDLE CLASS REVOLT? NSSGA Vice President of Government Affairs Pam Whitted ponders whether the Republicans will seize control of the House and Senate come November. She deliberates on what has gone wrong for the Democratic Party that led them to this predicament just two years after a resounding victory electing the president and majorities in both the House and Senate.
