The Source - Fall 2008 - (Page 38) at last When a plan comes together WE have all experienced it. That feeling when preparation, hard work, and opportunity come together. When the unification of efforts bring people together as a team. When the right ideas are developed and a unified message of a few becomes a voice heard by many. I know I’ve felt it. Like when, at a YMCA youth basketball game, 10-year-old Nathan, who had little basketball talent but a desire to be part of a team and a willingness to work hard at every practice, got his number called in a close game. There were bigger, stronger players on the team, but I had that feeling it was Nathan’s time. WE drew up the play for Nathan, he threw up a wild shot, and by preparation, hard work, and opportunity, it went in the basket. I’ll never forget the joy on his face, the adulation of his teammates, and the roar of the 15 or so people in the gym. Well, maybe not a roar, but there was definite noise. I get that same feeling about APGA. It is the right time and place for this organization. WE have years of preparation and hard work from more than 700 strong members, whose main focus is to provide a safe and economical energy source to the communities they serve. In fact, the work of APGA’s members has set the industry standards we follow today. The opportunity is at hand, with our move to Washington, D.C., the hiring of our tireless CEO, and the energy of a highly talented, motivated, and dedicated staff, WE have become the “Voice and Choice of Public Gas.” I encourage all APGA members to get involved. Attend the annual conferences and quarterly board meetings. Participate either in person or by phone in what is the “heartbeat” of APGA—our committees. It is a chance to get in on the action, to get your number called in a close game, to have your voice heard in Washington, to be a part of a team that is moving forward and has yet to reach its highest potential. My name is Mike Comstock. I am the acting director of the Gas Utility in Mesa, Ariz., and I am honored and privileged to serve as your chairman for 2008/2009. As a proud member of APGA for many years, Mesa views its membership with APGA as a wise investment for our organization and the citizens we serve. From Nathan’s perspective, while there were larger players on the court, none had a bigger heart. From my perspective, there may be associations with larger staffs and bigger budgets, but none are more credible or hard-working than the volunteers and staff at APGA. You can feel the energy when you walk through the door into APGA’s office in Washington. Preparation, hard work, and opportunity are all coming together to create that energy. The energy is THE SOURCE and over the next year, I hope you will experience it. Mike Comstock 2008-2009 APGA Chairman 38 THE SOURCE | THE VOICE AND CHOICE OF PUBLIC GAS
