The Source - Winter 2008 - (Page 14) THE BRIDGE TO THE RENEWABLE ENERGY FUTURE, from page 13 fuels, and industrial use, one thing is certain: the need to balance the demand with adequate supply is critical. The abolishment of the Executive and Congressional Moratoria on offshore energy production was a feat that did not come easily or overnight. This is only the first step in securing our nation’s energy future. A path out of the energy crisis The chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, who is an opponent of offshore production, has pledged to address offshore exploration in the first days of the next Congress, making it imperative that we demand the failed policies that created this energy crisis are not reinstated. With most conventional natural gas wells are maturing, it is vitally important that the federal government open new land–both on and off shore–to exploration and production while at the same time easing the regulatory burdens, streamlining the permitting process, and preventing frivolous lawsuits from hampering responsible production. More than ever before, industry and consumer groups must be aggressive and demand that the federal government treat the energy crisis as a front-burner issue. The future of natural gas is promising and the availability and affordability of this clean, green fuel will depend largely upon policy makers understanding the issue and consumer groups’ willingness to educate the public and advocate for increased domestic production. I am confident that, working together, we can accomplish this goal and take the next step in securing our energy future. John Peterson is a Republican member of Congress representing the Fifth Congressional District of Pennsylvania. He serves on the House Appropriations Committee and will be retiring at the end of the 110th Congress. Using energy to make energy In addition to the modest gains in renewable energy production, it takes energy to make renewable energy– further increasing demand of natural gas. As holds true with the production of tarsands in Canada and oil shale out West, a tremendous amount of natural gas is used to manufacture the components of windmills, solar panels, and ethanol–not to mention hydrogen. From the fertilizer used to grow corn, to the heat used to dry grains, the amount of natural gas used in the ethanol production process is substantial, and rivals the BTU value contained in a gallon of ethanol itself. While finding alternatives to foreign oil is critical to reducing our dependence, the conversion of our shorthaul and fleet vehicles to compressed natural gas (CNG) is a more pragmatic approach than further expanding the use of corn-based ethanol. With increased use of natural gas for electricity generation, transportation ON-SITE REFUELING FOR NATURAL GAS VEHICLES FuelMaker Refueling Appliances Offer Benefits for Gas Utilities, End Users, and the Environment DID YOU KNOW: * * * * * Gas Utilities can increase gas sales by promoting NGVs - the load from one NGV equals an entire house or more NGVs increase system load at a low cost NGVs level out load during evening hours and throughout the entire year FuelMaker refueling appliances can save both fleets and individual end users money on vehicle energy costs All parties using NGVs contribute to a cleaner environment and combat global warming FuelMaker Corporation has been in partnership with Gas Utilities in providing ON-SITE refueling solutions to their customers for over 17 years. FuelMaker is the world leader in designing, manufacturing and installing Vehicle Refueling Appliances for fleets of up to 40 NGVs. FuelMaker modular systems are reliable, affordable, and expandable to fit specific site needs. In 2005 FuelMaker released the Home Refueling Appliance “Phill” to the world.
