As you may know, in the month of December 2007, PIHRA had the largest increase in members in its 65-year history with 914 new members. Today, the association stands at 5,300 members making it the largest SHRM affiliate in the United States. Since my arrival on Nov. 12, 2007, I have deeply valued the many communications I have had with our members—with their emails and our numerous face-to-face meetings. What I have come to appreciate is a membership culture ready to tackle the challenges associated with change. Never in my 30-year history in business have I met so many change-friendly individuals. That spirit of change friendliness clearly shows an association culture ready to be change seeking in the core areas of association management—education, career development and networking. Further, I have seen this spirit of change throughout the PIHRA membership. For 2008, we are pursuing several areas for the future based on member requests. Here is a brief list of services and activities under consideration: • PIHRA Membership Survey: Through a PIHRA survey, we have asked you to help us identify your organizational and career development needs. Thanks to those that gave input to make our association better. We are researching other areas for expanded member benefits. • New Programs: These will address both the core HR practice areas and those skills associated with being effective HR leaders at the strategic level. Under development are new programs such as Generational Aspects of Employee Development, Succession Planning, Building Learning, Organizations on a Shoe-String Budget, Team Building, Organizational Development, Employee Engagement and programs for senior level HR practitioners. • Enhanced venues for our many sponsors, suppliers, exhibitors and alliance partners: PIHRA exists in large part due to the open relationship between our suppliers and HR member communities. Suppliers provide our members with valued products and services along with their needed financial contributions which offset PIHRA’s cost of operations. I encourage you to support our suppliers when the opportunity presents itself. It is our belief that these new services will assist our PIHRA members to be more effective at all levels within their respective organizations. These services will remove the sometimes complex obstacles to change, build capabilities, provide increased learning, remove boundaries, and leverage human resource activities. Our goal is to come along side each of our members, realizing that each situation calls for unique solutions that ultimately lead to building organizations of sustainable competitive value. Ultimately in this age of compressed timelines and increased demands from our customers, stakeholders and bosses, our members want cost-effective solutions that add value to their HR roles. As one member said to me, “We all want anything we do to be a career-enhancing move.” Please know that I am available via email (Doyle@PIHRA.org) or telephone (310-416-1210 ext. 821) to learn more about how this excellent organization can better serve your particular needs. My thanks again for making PIHRA YOUR association, Doyle W.
