Summer is almost over, fall is on the horizon…it’s a great time to get organized and assess your year and your plans for the future. With that in mind, I hope you’re planning to attend the 51st Annual PIHRA Conference & Exhibition, taking place Oct. 6-8, 2008, in Long Beach, Calif. If you haven’t yet registered, there’s still time. Program and registration details are available at the conference website, www.pihraconference.org. Before you begin exploring the website, I would like to take this opportunity to personally introduce you to the exciting program we have planned for you. PIHRA has chosen the theme, Advancing the Business of HR, to bring a respectable balance between ‘compliance’ and ‘strategic’ program components. Human resources management is the management of people at work. Over the last century, profound shifts have occurred in our economy, the nature and extent of competition, and the types of work that employees perform. One shift, from “personnel management” to “human resources management,” communicates the view of employees as resources whose active management can positively contribute to the organization’s success. HR professionals play an increasingly important role in employee management as partners to the executives at their companies. They also have the opportunity to view themselves as consultants, with the business leaders as clients. The challenge is to step forward and take full responsibility for providing services to business leaders that demonstrate a measurable impact on the core business operations, while at the same time building relationships with those executives. We believe that the wide array of educational sessions offered at the conference will advance your ability to be agents for change. Also, conference sessions will emphasize how to be the strategic partner and form critical alliances both inside and outside today’s organization. Getting away from the conference for a moment, PIHRA realizes that at any given time, some of our members are in transition. To assist, over the summer, PIHRA launched its new online career center which allows you to set up several cover letters and resumes, manage your job search, set up an alert to get notified of new jobs that are posted and much more. We are pleased to bring this new benefit to PIHRA members and hope that it helps you to better connect with potential employers. Lastly, it’s also membership renewal time at PIHRA. Shortly after the October conference ends, you will be receiving your renewal in the mail. We welcome you back as a member and we strive to continue providing services that meet your needs as an HR professional. Best wishes for a wonderful fall! We look forward to seeing you in October!
