As we head into a new year, perhaps it is time for us to reflect how interconnected our world is to events beyond our control. Yet, as HR professionals, we are expected to respond to a world of increasing complexity by playing a more strategic role than ever before while developing better and better HR processes. At the same time, we are being asked to reduce headcounts. We all know that globalization of individual companies and capital markets over the past two decades have changed the business landscape. In the midst of this global change, each of us may fi nd ourselves in the midst of great change, both professionally and personally. Moreover, in turn, each of us is impacted in sometimes-significant ways. In mid September, I had an opportunity to attend SHRM’s national Thought Leadership conference in Palm Springs and listened to presentations by the HR heads for such organizations as Yahoo, Cisco and Scripps Health in San Diego. Each spoke of how their firm deals with change and how they have expanded operations using technologies to provide better and lower-cost solutions for their customers. Each was impacted by competition and the constant movement of customers and competitors. All the while, global markets are pressuring these firms as well as more local ones, to innovate and reduce costs—not an easy feat. And, these global trends are pushing organizations to mange their assets as effectively as possible—especially their human assets. As I debriefed with colleagues on the conference, an important takeaway for us was how highly analytical these HR executives were. For example, they incorporate sophisticated organizational development approaches within their ‘HR practices’; they refine continuous improvement processes; they apply statistical and quantitative analysis (e.g., people metrics) to drive out extraneous costs and they build critical linkage to customers, employees and finances. All of this is to say that as you grapple with the local implications of complexity within your own firm and how your skills are being challenged, please know that PIHRA is working ever more diligently in 2009 to provide relevant and meaningful solutions that can advance your professional success. We want you to know that we are listening. Based on your input in our annual member survey in 2008, here a few areas we will continue to emphasize: • Educational offerings in such areas as strategic HR practices with “C” level content and certification. • Expanded collaboration with SHRM on educational venues—our 2009 conference in Palm Springs will represent a larger southwest SHRM (chapter) participation. • Continued emphasis on the “core” HR practice areas—our January legal update will be as hard-hitting and relevant as ever. In closing, my wish for you is to view change as an opportunity and a winnable challenge. In these uncertain times, don’t allow these challenges to frighten you or demoralize you. Many of our HR leaders are clearly demonstrating that our profession is advancing solutions and is ready to tackle the complexity of an uncertain world with coherent responses.
