CONduCTiNg MuLTi SiTE PAviNg iMPrOvEMENTS TO ENSurE CONTiNuiTy AUTHOR c.b. kuzlik, senior Vice President COMPANY rose Paving co. chAllenge: 7-Eleven, Inc., the world’s largest chain in the convenience retailing industry, remodeled more than 1,000 7-Eleven stores on the east coast including, in some cases, upgrades to both building interiors and exteriors. More than 75 of those locations, or a total of 970,463 square feet, were in need of parking lot enhancements ranging from 2-inch mill and overlay to full parking lot reconstruction. But none of its store locations could be shut down for any length of time to make the necessary repairs. The job required skilled project management expertise and high-quality materials, all within a tight time frame and budget. best PrActice: Rather than complete the repairs as individual projects occurring separately over time, 7-Eleven saw the value in completing paving improvements to multiple properties at once. Treating multiple locations as one overhaul helped to save money on materials and resources. Choosing a parking lot management contractor with national capabilities and project management expertise helped to ensure that work on all locations was consistent and performed without any inconvenience to customers or employees. results: Work was completed within a pre-specified time frame of five weeks. All procedures occurred during normal store hours so that business could continue uninterrupted. This was accomplished by performing work in two stages at every location and directing traffic on-site to ensure customer and employee safety at all times. The magnitude of this scope of work yielded savings, as confirmed by 7-Eleven, through material procurement and project management efficiencies.
