feature Northern California Conference Highlights By Nancy Schubb, CASC President-Elect The California Association of School Counselor’s (CASC) Northern California Conference was held at the San Ramon Marriott on March 28. Over 200 counselors, counselor educators and graduate students were in attendance for an amazing day of professional development and networking. The full-day conference started with the SPARC Awards ceremony where Josh Brady from the California Department of Education assisted Bob Tyra in awarding many deserving counselors and their schools for documenting their data-driven counseling programs. CASC was honored to have Rosario o Marin, secretary of the State and Consumer Services Agency, share her passion, wisdom and knowledge for students during the morning session. We were fortunate to have Pulitzer Prize-nominated author Dave Pelzer, author of six inspirational books including A Child Called “It” as the day’s keynote speaker. Dave shared his emotional story of abuse as a child and reminded counselors that if we remain strong and available for our students, they can overcome any adversity. In keeping with the conference theme of “Workforce, Ready, Set Go!” over 20 Se workshops were available worksho including Streamlining the includin College Admissions Process, A Using Ca Career Assessments, and Help Students d Helping Toward Productive Futures. Finally, CASC Executive Director Loretta Whitson encouraged attendees to continue advocating for school counselors and oﬀered a legislative update including a report from the CASC lobbyist on what is happening in Sacramento and how it aﬀects school counselors. ■ 12 The California School Counselor | summer 2008
