California School Counselor - Summer 2008 - (Page 18) Legislative Update Advocacy and Outreach… Many Voices, One Message Our message is plain and simple… School counselors are an essential component that contributes to the effectiveness of schools and impacts student success in school and in life! The aforementioned title “Many Voices, One Message” was copied from a column in the California School Boards Association’s California School News (February 2008). The title sums up the message to the rankand-fi le school counselor. The message is that advocacy needs to happen at both a local and state level. It is a call for school counselors across the state to mobilize. CASC encourages you to work with us in the effort to overcome the political obstacles that impede the school counseling profes- 1 2 3 4 sion’s growth and stability. Here are some suggestions of what you can do to be a part of the movement. Contact CASC to advance the education agenda and work on a committee or as part of the strategic political planning efforts. Visit your local legislator to discuss key education issues outlined by CASC. (See CASC Web site for handouts and information.) Invite your legislator and/or your legislator’s staff member to school to learn firsthand what a school counselor does. (Of course, get permission from administration.) Send data (SPARC) to local VIPs such as real estate agents, local municipalities, and key parent groups. 5 6 7 Know the issues at hand. Do not position yourself against other educators as a persuasive argument for funding. (Example of what not to say: Instead of getting rid of counselors, the school district should get rid of !) Thank legislators and their staff in writing for anything they do to help. We need you to become involved now. Contact CASC at CASCMAIL@ schoolcounselor-ca.org. Please do not assume that because CASC is active and effective that we can do it alone. As the caption indicates…Advocacy and Outreach…Many Voices, One Message! ■ “CREDIT RECOVERY” FOR YOUR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS BY CORRESPONDENCE-ACCREDITED* Are there students in your high school who need to make up credits or who wish to take a course not offered locally this term?
