California School Counselor - Fall 2008 - (Page 11) feature Prevention is Key in Crisis Response Use the ‘teachable moment’ to prevent further crises By Cheri Lovre Director, Crisis Management Institute When it comes to crisis response, there are several aspects that are easily overlooked, underestimated or too narrowly focused. The challenges we face in schools relative to school safety, prevention, crisis response, follow-up and school climate are ever increasing in complexity. What seems clear is that crisis response is personality-driven. It takes having someone with passion for this to take it on and make it work, because it is always in addition to people’s “regular” responsibilities. We all have a full plate at work without crisis. So in schools that have a couple of people who are really invested in it, plans are in place and responses have been tied to prevention. In schools where it is simply following a mandate, results are potluck. The California School Counselor | fall 2008 11
