feature High Schools Partner with Cash for College to Boost Cal Grant Awards By Despina Costopoulos Statewide Coordinator Cash for College California Student Aid Commission In 2008 more than 500 Cash for College ﬁnancial aid workshops were conducted throughout the state to help low-income and ﬁrst- generation students and families successfully complete the ﬁnancial aid application process. More than 23,000 students and their families were served, which contributed to the 10 percent increase of the number of Cal Grants oﬀered by the state. Cash for College is a partnership eﬀort of the California Student Aid Commission, its regional partners, high schools, community college and universities, college access programs, business, government and community groups. Cash for College ﬁnancial aid workshops also oﬀer $1,000 incentive scholarships to encourage high school seniors to attend a workshop and apply for a Cal Grant by the March 2 deadline. At least one $1,000 incentive scholarship is oﬀered per workshop and is awarded to a high school senior to use at a two-year or four-year degree-granting institution inside or outside of California. More than 500 scholarships were awarded in May through grant funding from the College Access Foundation of California. Eﬀective partnerships like Cash for College work to help even more students qualify for critical state aid. Cal Grants keep students moving forward with their education after high school graduation. More than 90 percent of Cal Grant recipients attending two- or four-year schools re-enroll for a second year. This year more than $800 million in Cal Grants were oﬀered to more than 200,000 eligible students throughout the state.
