California School Counselor - Fall 2008 - (Page 19) feature 2008 Delegate Assembly Process, Practice, Policy and Governance The ASCA 2008 Delegate Assembly was held in Atlanta, GA. on June 26-27, 2008. Annually, ASCA provides an open forum for all 50 states and 151 delegates to examine the policies and practices of the organization and make recommendations for improvement. In large and small group settings, delegates voiced their concerns about pressing issues facing their organizations and offered potential solutions. Through this process, the Delegate Assembly allows individual states the opportunity to look at each other’s accomplishments and concerns from a broader point of view, then make motions to ASCA for recommended changes. Richard Wong, ASCA executive director, gave his annual report and vision of the profession of school counseling. He believes that there will be a day when school counselors will no longer be required to explain what they do, because like math and English teachers, everyone will already know. He felt, that in the future, it will be self-evident that school counselors will be recognized and appreciated for the value of their work and the results that they demonstrate. He also announced the following ASCA accomplishments: school counselors will be eligible for mental health training through the Red Cross, the expansion of the School Counselor of the Year Award, completion of the ASCA school counselor competencies, and collaboration with College Board to provide workshops and training to principals about the role and function of school counselors. ASCA is a thriving organization with an increased membership this year of 15 percent. California received the award for the state with the largest numerical increase. On behalf of the CASC organization, it is our privilege serving you at delegate assembly as we look toward this next year with a renewed vision and voice for California. ■ California Delegate Assembly members attending this year’s conference (l-r) Cyndie Bogan, Donna Cleman, Nancy Schubb, Vanessa Gomez-Lee, George Montgomery, and Dean Lesicko.
