California School Counselor - Fall 2008 - (Page 6) Presidential Perspectives By Nancy Schubb CASC President 2008-2009 Every Single Journey Begins with a Single Hop – Kermit the Frog I realize a Muppet is not a recognized expert in the school counseling profession, but I am of the philosophy that, on occasion, simpler is better. One “hop” at a time – I believe strongly that we will, without question, link school counseling practices more powerfully to the academic, personal/social, and career development of California pupils. We p ls. will contribute to the main he maintenance of accountability within the profession ntability and will help educational policy makers, school administrators, and counselor supervisors better understand the unique contributions of school counselors to the creation and maintenance of healthy, safe, and productive schools. I am particularly excited to be your president as professional school counselors have made many strides in the last year toward becoming n in ndispensable in student academic ach chievement. Here are a few of our rece accomplishments: cent • The California Association of Sc School Counselors (CASC) became a state charter of the American s Sch Counselors Association hool (AS SCA). • The California Department C o of Education issued the “California Results-Based S School Counseling and S Student Support Guidelines.” • Initial data indicated the Middle and High School Supplemental School Counseling Program (AB 1802) was effective, and has been reauthorized for another year. • The California State Standards for school counselors were published. However, as I write this first “Presidential Perspectives,” I am conscious that we cannot be complacent. The California Association of School Counselors and all school counselors must continue to address the achievement gap, No Child Left Behind, and the multiple pathways to career success for our students. My commitment to you this year will be to tirelessly advocate for professional school counselors, to offer appropriate and meaningful professional development, and to expand member benefits. You can expect an advocacy toolkit, an interactive blog on the CASC Web site, and a school counselor evaluation tool, to name a few. Please consider this my personal invitation to you to contact me at any time with questions, concerns, comments and/or suggestions. I look forward to hearing from you. ■ My commitment to you this year will be to tirelessly advocate for professional school counselors, to offer appropriate and meaningful professional development, and to expand member benefits. 6 The California School Counselor | fall 2008 r
