TRAUMA INTERVENTION DAY ONE Trauma is not the same as grief. It has lasting, deleterious effects on short-term memory, concentration, and many other abilities critical for learning. Test scores plummet for those struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder. To meet the needs of those who have experienced trauma, you must understand the unique symptoms caused by changes in the brain’s ability to function. Learn how victims mobilize in the heat of a threat and how this mobilization sets the stage for reliving the event over and over again. Get the skills to help students cope with nightmares, anxiety, irritability, and more. A Workbook for Survivors of Trauma • • • • What the NATIONAL GRIEF LOSS, and , BEREAVEMENT In this workshop, you will learn vital skills for enabling impacted individuals to manage the “tasks” of grieving. You will also learn how to structure your response to support those in need while maintaining a sense of normalcy throughout the school. This is a one-day training. The first half focuses on the skills needed to organize response efforts, and the second half addresses grief specifically among children. You will learn: • The impact death has on overall school climate and how to restore balance. • How to recognize and share the “teachable moments” of a tragic experience. • Steps for establishing a “safe room” that helps those affected and minimizes schoolwide disruption. • How children at different developmental stages process grief and loss. • Skills and activities you can use in the aftermath of loss. If you haven’t heard of the new emergency response regulations, you will in the next year. The National Incident Management System (NIMS) requires schools to meet regulations that will unify emergency response personnel from the school building to the federal level. But protocol will only get you so far. Because NIMS focuses on bringing multiple agencies together to operate under a single command, your school’s emergency response structure could be disabled if you aren’t prepared. Also, NIMS will do nothing to help your school community recover from loss. It is your job to help your school community heal. Learn how to achieve NIMS compliance without losing yourself in the process!
