School clients come to school counselors to tell them how awful their lives are and need to be listened to. What does need changing, however, is the perspective of the school client that thinks that his or her life is awful. When a school client leaves your office, he should leave feeling that things aren’t as terrible as he thought. He should leave with specific tools to try, just as an experiment, for a short time. This opportunity to try something new and think of himself differently decreases the fear of taking a risk and increases the possibility of success. You are contributing to life strategies that can help your school client to have better relationships, learn to be more responsible for intrinsic change and understand how he or she learns best. What an opportunity. ■ Linda Metcalf, Ph.D., is a former junior high school teacher and school counselor.
