California School Counselor - Winter 2008 - (Page 18) feature Leadership Development Institute Each summer CASC board members and invited d d guests convene for a Leadership Development lopment Institute (LDI). This year LDI took place in ace Garden Grove, a few blocks from the venue selected for this year’s CASC state conference which will take place in Anaheim. Board members were encouraged to invite other CASC members to the institute in an effort to expand leadership opportunities throughout the state. We were excited to see that we had a number of people within the organization who were anxious to make contributions. By Dean Lesicko, CASC President-Elect CASC President Nancy Schubb facilitated the day of workshops on a variety of topics aimed at developing the leadership skills of the individuals taking on the task of leading our state organization. The day began with a review of the association’s goals developed last year under the guidance of Past President George Montgomery in an effort to continue with our efforts to provide meaningful professional development, recruit and retain new members, and to promote and publish new research on the Middle and High School Supplementary Counseling Program (MHSSCP). Loretta Whitson, CASC executive director, conducted a session on how to recruit school counseling graduate students as new CASC members. Loretta stressed that it was vitally important to share the history of our association and the strong contributions we’ve made to the profession over the last several years in an effort to help new members understand the contributions they can make by joining CASC. Pamela Bachilla, our legislative advocate, provided us with an introduction to political advocacy. Th is workshop was extremely informative and will assist our association in building capacity as we continue to advocate for legislation that will lead to better outcomes for California students through effective use of the resources that school counselors are specifically trained to provide to all students. The day concluded with each committee developing a work plan for the upcoming year that would support our association goals. We remain focused on encouraging new membership, providing professional development, and encouraging new research in the field. We are also anxious to train school counselors throughout the state on how to utilize the newly developed California standards for the school counseling profession to develop an effective tool for guiding and evaluating the work of school counselors in our state. ■ CASC’s 2008 CASC Executive Director Loretta Whitson and Gov. Schwarzenegger, along with other dignitaries, congratulated the 2008 Governor’s Fitness Challenge winners on Sept. 17, 2008 in Sacramento. CASC is an association partner.
