California School Counselor - Winter 2008 - (Page 19) feature ASCA Announces Hughes Middle School Earns RAMP Designation The American School Counselors Association (ASCA) announced earlier this year that Hughes Middle School was designated as a Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) school and recognized during a special ceremony at ASCA’s annual conference in Atlanta, GA on June 30, 2008. “All of this year’s RAMP honorees have shown their commitment to students and the school counseling profession,” said Sparks, director of school counseling for Wake County Public Schools. “Th is designation distinguishes these schools and encourages school counselors nationwide to continue to strive for success.” The American School Counselor Association (www. schoolcounselor.org) is a worldwide nonprofit organization based in Alexandria, VA. Founded in 1952, ASCA supports school counselors’ efforts to help students focus on academic, personal/social and career development so they not only achieve success in school but are prepared to lead fulfi lling lives as responsible members of society. The association provides professional development, publications and other resources, research and advocacy to 24,000 professional school counselors around the globe. ■ COLLEGE ADMISSIONS AND CAREER PLANNING Hughes Middle School’s counseling team and 2008 RAMP award recipients (l-r) Michelle Koga, Bobbi Clarke and Vera Pim. The RAMP designation, awarded to schools that align with the criteria set in the ASCA National Model, recognizes schools that are committed to delivering a comprehensive, data-driven school counseling program and an exemplary educational environment. Hughes Middle School’s counseling program was reviewed by a panel of school counseling professionals in order to receive this award. Hughes Middle School is only one of two schools in California to win the RAMP award this year. The prestigious RAMP designation for Hughes Middle School is valid for three years. The Hughes’ counseling team consists of Bobbi Clarke, Michelle Koga, and Vera Pim. Eric Sparks, ASCA’s 2007-08 president, said Hughes Middle School is to be commended for its dedication to serving all students and demonstrating how effective school counseling programs can make a difference in students’ lives.
