California School Counselor - Winter 2008 - (Page 21) feature TECHNOLOGY TIPS California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Releases Statistics on Pupil Personnel Services Credentials PPS credentials with authorization in school counseling decreased, school counseling internship credentials increased In California, there are 38 institutions with approved Pupil Personnel Services Credential (PPS) programs: 16 California State University campuses, four University of California campuses, and 18 private/ independent institutions. The PPS credential authorizes individuals to provide services such as assessments, problem prevention and early intervention, techniques for facilitating individual growth and development, and consultation services to students, teachers and parents. The PPS credentials authorize one of the following four specializations: School Counseling, School Psychology, School Social Work, and Child Welfare and Attendance. Approximately 1,500 credentials were issued in PPS and another 3,000 to 4,000 authorizations were renewed each year. After a gradual increase in the number of PPS credentials1 from 2001-02 to 2003-04, there was a steady decline in the number of credentials authorized in two specializations: School Counseling (by 19 percent) and School Psychology (by 12 percent) whereas Social Work showed an increase of 9 percent in the past six years. By Carol Lane Elementary Vice President and Technology Assistant Editor Do you know what is available at the Department of Technology in your district? Many districts offer free technology classes. In the San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) all subjects and all levels, from beginners to advanced users are offered. I have taken many of these classes and it has enabled me to become a much more efficient counselor, able to create forms, prepare Power Point presentations and other things pertinent to my profession. SBCUSD offers an Online University, Computer Repair, Network Support, Apple Macintosh Support, a Help Desk, Secondary and Elementary Technology Liaisons, a website with many resources, and my personal favorite, Digital Delivery. When was the last time you checked to see what opportunities are waiting for you? Do yourself a favor.
