Our Time to Celebrate
By Charles Sadler, CGMP, CHSP, CHSC Executive Director & CEO
Pearl, Pearl Jam…I hope you are starting to see a pattern here! I am just having a little fun, as I discovered that the symbol for the 30th anniversary is a pearl. The year 2011 brings SGMP into its 30 th year since our founding in 1981. An occasion like this can make a powerful statement about SGMP’s achievements and reaching important milestones in the growth and development of our organization. Not to mention that creating a big event (or series of events and commemorations) around an anniversary can also be the source of a lot of special fun for members and staff. This will give us an opportunity to reflect on our rich and colorful history in the meetings industry, as well as to plan our next steps into the future. But there is more. Not only does 2011 represent the 30th anniversary of SGMP’s founding, but 2012 will represent SGMP’s 30 th annual National Education Conference (NEC). Our plan is a year-long celebration starting this summer in Norfolk, Virginia, at the 2011 NEC and ending next summer in New Orleans, Louisiana, at the 2012 NEC. I can’t think of two better cities to celebrate our pearl anniversary – and it’s not just because they are both home to some of the best oysters in the world! You won’t want to miss this year’s NEC! Registration has been in progress for suppliers since November and for planners since January. I encourage you to register now for what will be another outstanding conference experience for the best in education, resources and networking. Looking back at SGMP since I joined in 1987, I can personally tell you how much the organization has changed and grown. But the best thing to me is that, over all these years, SGMP leadership has never lost sight of our core mission and vision. One only has to look at our website to see everything that is “new” about us and yet still see our founding mission and vision intact and prominent. From our founder Sam Gilmer through all of our 13 national presidents, each leader has brought us to the next level by addressing the challenges that faced the government meetings industry in each era of leadership. You will notice here – as you have likely already seen on our website and in other places – that SGMP will be using a commemorative 30th anniversary logo in 2011. I love how it seamlessly fits our current branding scheme, but still has an instantly noticeable “pop” to it to catch the eye and to announce our special anniversary. We hope you love it, too! We certainly have earned the right to toot our horn and celebrate who we are and what a fantastic dynamic we bring to each other and to the meetings industry. So, get ready to celebrate from Norfolk to New Orleans! Thinking back on pearls, I would like to leave you with a quote from Pearl Bailey, who I had the pleasure of meeting in 1982, who was born near Norfolk, and whose music I adore… “You must change in order to survive.”
