SGMP NATIONAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2011-2013
Staying plugged in and energized
By Robert Coffman, CGMP National President It has been my honor to serve you as your president over the past twelve months. We have accomplished a lot in this short period but much more is still to be done. What an absolute thrill it was for me to be able to spend time at this year’s National Education Conference with our past national presidents. I am still completely energized by their examples as leaders (and by the stories they shared as friends!), as I continue my term in service to SGMP. For any not-for-profit organization, success will always be found in the delicate balance between member needs and mission focus. As the continuing saga regarding government meetings unfolds in the media and all-around, and as we all deal with those related and ever-changing policies in our daily jobs, this balance has perhaps never been more delicate. Since SGMP represents all kinds of planners (federal and state/municipality government planners and contract planners) and various types of suppliers (service and facility providers, planner and vendor support), our audience is plenty wide. We represent each side and every angle of the professional transactions that occur between and among our members on a daily basis. Because our Society’s mission is meetings education and not legislative advocacy, our priorities are quite specific. We take actions to teach the rules and regulations that will enhance your expertise and to share the best practices that will improve the cost-effectiveness and success of your meetings. Many of you know that my President’s Vision for 2011-2013 is for SGMP to be a premier organization in our industry and that we will achieve continued growth, provide industry leading education and expanded opportunities for member involvement. In the face of what can feel like relentless scrutiny, the concerted efforts of your national and chapter leaders and the steady determination of our members from coast to coast has already seen encouraging and exciting results. I would like to share some of those successes with all members now. Our plan was to enhance industry impact. In addition to positive impact that SGMP has had during a tumultuous year for the industry, our website has also become a key resource for our members and others. We are now receiving 500,000+ webpage hits per month. Our strategy was to expand educational resources. SGMP has now briefed our chapter leaders on the launch of the new Government Meeting Specialist program for our chapters to excel with our educational core competencies. Coming up in the next fiscal year will be our Online Education System that will be launched to provide cutting-edge learning experiences for our members. Our goal was to grow membership. We saw our net membership level increase for seven consecutive months and our overall numbers surpass 3,700 for the first time in over a year. Perhaps most importantly, our ever-important planner member ratio reached an all-time high in 2012 of 54.2%. Thank you all for joining and for renewing! Each of us surely concurs on the importance of constantly striving to improve our own professional education, whether we “got connected” to government meetings decades ago or very recently. We all definitely agree on the significance of the standing and stature of our proud profession—for this is why we plugged into SGMP. And why, more than perhaps ever before, we must all stay plugged in and energized. Go SGMP!
