Sustainability is More than the Environment It is Economics, Too!

and travel industry has a major impact on the U.S. economy. As government looks for ways to cut spending, they do their agencies, the economy and the country a great disservice when they do not support – or actually reduce – government meetings and travel. SGMP and government meetings are a big part of the meetings industry, which is why we are a partner member in the Convention Industry Council (CIC) and why I sit on the CIC national board representing SGMP. Focusing on sustaining the integrity of all meetings is vital to the industry’s growth and to our impact on the economy. Sustainability is more than the environment. As an organization, we should be dedicated to the sustainability of SGMP’s resources not just in the financial and human forms, but also in the environmental form with the promotion of GREEN initiatives. These three components are key to a successful sustainability plan. We need to get our message out that government meetings are important to the public and vital to the economy. But we also must remain sensitive to the environment by supporting and educating our members on GREEN meeting initiatives and on how to measure and reduce our carbon footprint. This issue of Government Connections focuses on networking. And without meetings, your opportunity to network is reduced. That is why it is so important to be an advocate for government meetings and how they play a role in all three key components of sustainability. SGMP National President Melody Kebe and I are currently working on SGMP’s sustainability plan. We had the pleasure recently to have a meeting with George Heartwell, mayor of Grand Rapids, Michigan (It was an SGMP meeting that brought about this fantastic networking opportunity!) He is recognized as an action-oriented mayor and a national leader on the power of sustainability plans. In that meeting, we were able to discuss and exchange ideas to start the formation of SGMP’s sustainability plan. This plan will be
