The word on the (now proverbial) street is that interpersonal communication is only done on the internet. We are told every day that face-toface communication has been replaced by—ahem—Facebook. It seems to be broadly accepted that everything is now being done on a computer, a smartphone or via some other new technology. And it seems that as residents of one global village, nobody wants (or needs) to interact in person anymore. Therefore, conferences and seminars have now given way to distance learning and gone the way of webinars. Further, bricks and mortar are out and virtual associations are in. End of story. At SGMP, what we tell you is that our chapters play a significant part of the SGMP member experience as the face of our Society. Our members are telling us that they want interpersonal interaction; studies are now showing us that people actually need it. The Convention Industry Council (CIC) conducted a national survey of corporate and association meeting planners, industry executives and business travelers. In January, it launched the “FACE TIME - It Matters” campaign to promote the benefits of meeting face to face.
