Government Connections - Winter 2012 - (Page 37) MEMBERSHIP NEWS SGMP Headquarters Staff Executive Director & CEO Charles Sadler, CGMP, CHSP, CHSC $30 for SGMP’s 30th Anniversary THIS YEAR, SGMP has been celebrating the 30th anniversary of our historic founding. On Thursday, October 27, 2011, we formally acknowledged this event on Gilmer-Founders Day. As many of our members also know, the history of SGMP is not that of one single person, but it did start with one single vision. That single vision has held true for more than 30 years. It came from Sam O. Gilmer, who realized in 1981 that none of the existing meetings industr y organizations addressed the unique needs of those whose work was impacted by the rules and reg ulation s of t he federal gover nment. So Gilmer – w ith the help of many others, but especially Dave Dubois and Jim Horvath – stepped up to create a new association. They held their initial organization meeting with 70+ other government meeting professionals on Thursday, October 29, 1981, in Washington, DC. extended and is now available for planners who join SGMP through March 31, 2012. The special rate applies only to a government meeting planner who has never been an SGMP member or who has not been a member for at least 12 months. SGMP has posted a 30th Anniversary Special membership application on our website under “membership applications.” These tools have been created for your use to promote this special offer in celebration of this important milestone in SGMP’s history. Any questions on this program may be directed to Charles Sadler, CGMP, CHSP, CHSC, or Mike Downard, CGMP, at SGMP headquarters. Thirty years ago this year our vision was simple – provide government meeting professionals with education, resources and networking to do a better job at their jobs. That vision became the mission of SGMP – to enhance the knowledge and expertise of government meeting professionals by improving the quality of, and promoting the cost-effectiveness of, government meetings. This May, SGMP will host our 30 th annual National Education Conference (NEC). The theme of the first NEC— “Spending Government Money Powerfully” – was a nod to our initials and to our focus on improving our industry by educating our members. We look forward to celebrating our 30th with you and your new member colleague! G There is no better way today to spend government money powerfully than to join SGMP at our special $30 rate. Please invite a colleague to join SGMP by March 31st as part of this cost-effective promotion and celebration.
