Count on us as your trade show department, your research department and your services department. Following are some consumer initiatives SIA would like to highlight in this issue of T.I.P. “BEST PRACTICES” FOR LEARNING SIA’s “Winter Feels Good” initiative yields educational tools A new interactive tool kit that teaches children “best practices” for snow sports will be available free this fall for use by physical education and classroom teachers, recreation directors and other professionals involved in getting children active. The tool kit is packaged as a CD and will be posted in the education section of www.winterfeelsgood.com and on www. snowmonsters.com. Developed through SIA’s “Winter Feels Good” initiative, the tool kit is the result of a collaborative partnership between SIA, Professional Ski Instructors of America/ American Association of Snowboard Instructors (PSIA/AASI), the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA), the United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA), the Cross Country Ski Areas Association (CCSAA), Snow Monsters and the Ski Utah School Program. The tool kit was unveiled in early August at the annual meeting of the MidWest Ski Areas Association and also was introduced at the Northeast Summit and the joint annual conference of the Ski Areas of New York and the Pennsylvania Ski Areas Association. Through this outreach SIA already has received requests for more than 6,000 copies of the CD version. Program organizers also will be distributing the tool kit directly to physical education teachers and recreation professionals at conferences this fall and winter. Informational newsletters already are sent to a database of more than 5,000 professionals who attend these conferences. “The messaging behind Winter Feels Good is very simple,” said David Ingemie, president of SIA. “We want to get the point across that snow sports are fun family activities that help contribute to a healthy lifestyle. Teaching the basics to elementary level children is an ideal way to initiate lifetime involvement in snow sports.” Winter Feels Good was initiated in 2003 to address the growing obesity/lack of activity trend in the U.S. The tool kit features a variety of learning materials, including interactive “edu-games” illustrating how to dress for snow sports and easy-to-do warm-up exercises demonstrated by the popular Snow Monsters characters, lesson plans, parent take-home flyers and other resources that will enable children to learn the basics of snow sports right in their classroom or at home. All content adheres to standards developed by the Professional Ski Instructors of America/American Association of Snowboard Instructors and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education. Instruction covers alpine skiing, cross country skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing. The tool kit will be distributed in the fall through resort and retail outreach programs and through professional organizations that represent “activity leaders,” including the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), the YMCA and the National Association of Parks and Recreation. Winter Feels Good project managers also are working with the National Ski Areas Association, the Cross Country Ski Areas Association and state resort association to encourage local use in schools, recreation and parks departments, physical activity organizations and health groups. Twenty-six SIA suppliers and members of the media are involved with Winter Feels Good and its companion program, Winter Trails. The programs offer exceptional opportunities for brand visibility among families and entry into the lucrative education market. Suppliers’ brands can be highlighted via collateral, newsletters sent to recreation professionals and the www. winterfeelsgood Web site. Retailers and reps can take advantage of the program by collaborating with WFG in states where the Winter Feels Good initiative has an active presence among physical education, health and recreation professionals.
