SIA The Intelligent Partner - Summer 2007 - (Page 6) | WORD OFF THE SLOPES | SIA STAFF Suzanne Aguas Accounting Manager saguas@snowsports.org What Products Flew Off Your Shelves This Season and Which Product Sales Surprised You? Product that flew off the shelves for us this season: Under Armour; Ladies Arc’teryx; Thule Boxes and ANY double ski bag with wheels. Surprise product sales – X Socks and Sportstubes. Jessica Prutzman – Pinnacle Sports, Inc, Reading, PA Alicia Allen Associate Director of PR and Consumer Marketing aallen@snowsports.org Laura Benjamin Receptionist lbenjamin@snowsports.org Maggie Bittner Meetings and Special Events Manager mbittner@snowsports.org Dave Blakeslee Manager of Internet Communications dblakeslee@snowsports.org Linda Boodley Office Manager and Staff Accountant lboodley@snowsports.org Judy Brown Project Assistant jbrown@snowsports.org Henry Cho Database Manager hcho@snowsports.org Kelly Davis Market Research Manager kdavis@snowsports.org Mary DeOrnellas Trade Show and Membership Services Coordinator mdeornellas@snowsports.org Debbie Brown Des Roches Director of Trade Show ddesroches@snowsports.org Julie Lynch Edwards Director of Consumer Research research@snowsports.org Sherry Gilbert Print Production Manager sgilbert@snowsports.org Bryan Ginn IT Manager bginn@snowsports.org Patricia Grenke Trade Show and Membership Services Manager pgrenke@snowsports.org Leslie Groves Director of Marketing and Communications lgroves@snowsports.org Sara Hobbs Manager of Board Relations and Office of the President shobbs@snowsports.org David Ingemie President dingemie@snowsports.org Reddy Kennedy Central Region Sales and Marketing Manager rkennedy@snowsports.org Mary Cecile Neville Associate Director of Trade Marketing and Member Services mcneville@snowsports.org Bob Orbacz Director of Finance and Operations rorbacz@snowsports.org Pete Pandoli Coordinator of Education and Special Projects ppandoli@snowsports.org Chris Semon Director of Sales and Membership chris@snowsports.org Mary Jo Tarallo Director of Education and Special Projects mjtarallo@snowsports.org Dave Wray Western Sales and Marketing Manager dwray@snowsports.org Ed Wray Eastern Sales and Marketing Manager ewray@snowsports.org though both are expensive. Our customers are serious skiers and there seems to be little price resistance if there is a “story” to be told. Chris Middlemiss – THE SPORT LOFT, Salt Lake City, UT Hot sellers this season were Swix socks, Ski Trab Skis, Madshus BC Skis and Atomic Nordic Racing Skis. Steve Soistman – Chain Reaction Sports, Homer, AK Foot foundation SBS shims were our hottest new product and we sold a ton of them. The profit margin is amazing and takes boot fitting and alignment and combines them in a 15-minute process. Eric Ward – The Foot Foundation L.L.C, Aspen, CO A surprise hot selling product that keeps amazing us every season, Earbags. I found Earbags at the SIA show about 5 years ago. I placed a small order to give them a try and reordered three or four times during the season. Every year since we carried them, they keep increasing in sales. Rick Pasturczak – Alpine Accessories, Lake in the Hills, IL Snowball makers were the hot item at our shop. We made a huge order pre-season and did a reorder of the same size mid-season. Randy Pattison – Online Ski & Board Shop, Running Springs, CA For the second year in a row our hottest selling item was any Smith goggle with the Sensor lens. We sold more than 4,500 units of Smith Sensor lens goggles. The surprise hot item was Skullcandy…couldn’t keep them on the shelves…each time we’d replenish, they’d sell out faster. Erik Anderson – American Skiing Company (42 retail locations nationwide) Lace Cashmere underwear from Snow Angel. Betsy Valian – Valian’s Ski Shop, Govt. Camp, OR Biggest and best surprise this year was Aline footbeds. Lange junior race boots also did very well. Lionel Hering – Happy Tunes Ski Service Center, LLC Carrabassett Valley, ME Our hottest new product was definitely the introduction of Movement Skis to the Whistler region. New brand to a perfectly suited marketplace – big mountain freeride skis. Our hottest model was the Goliath. Jayson Faulkner – The Escape Route Adventure Group, Whistler, B.C. Winter being very late and very soft in California, the hottest style was system jackets from anybody especially The North Face and Spyder. Surprising hot ticket item was from Arcteryx. The Theta SV had 95% sell through with the high retail. I believe the reason for that is, people went to different parts of the states to ski and they wanted the maximum protection without adding weight to their load. John Cann – Mel Cotton’s Sporting Goods San Jose, CA BULA and COAL knit hats and Hand Painted Christmas Ornaments with Ski Lift/Ski Run themes were big sellers for us this season. Katherine Ake – Crested Butte Mountain Resort, Crested Butte, CO High end Scott Goggles were really a surprise as far as sales. Burton sell thru in all categories at retail was also a surprise as well as maintained margin on Burton Snowboards. Dick Adams – Adams Ski & Snowboard Shop & Rental, Zanesfield, OH Items we couldn’t keep in stock this season were Capita snowboards, Never Summer snowboards, Union bindings, Ride bindings, Van’s women’s snowboard boots and Deeluxe snowboard boots. Big surprise hits for us were the Bern Baker helmet, Smith Phenom goggle and Da Kine purses. Gorio Bustamante – evo, Seattle, WA This season the two products that were “flying off the shelf” were CW-X underwear (especially the Insulator) and most of our Kjus clothing even In New England, it was a gnarly start to kick off our winter sports season. That did not stop the customer from demanding innovation, however. The unexpected fireball was the new Black Diamond 01 binding. It spun hard and fast well into March. The other hero of 06/07 was Arbor snowboards in general. In a rough snow year the entire line sold through well and checked across the market.
