The SPFA Board elections for 2012 completed in June and the new Board (2012-2014) was seated on July 1 and held its kick off meeting on July 26. The results of the election are available at www.sprayfoam.org. One of the fi rst actions of the new Board was to approve the Consultant Membership Committee existence, structure, and criteria. The Board will meet again in-person in conjunction with the CPI Annual Convention in Atlanta, GA on Sept. 27.
In June 2012, SPFA mobilized to represent SPF industry interests with the Connecticut General Assembly. A bill (CT HB5248), originally addressing only other foam insulation products other than SPF, was approved by the CT Public Safety Committee with last minute changes to include SPF. Subsequently Public Act 12-164, requiring extensive testing, product certification and state approval requirements, was sent to the Governor’s office for signing into law. The basis for removing the exclusions for SPF were unclear but unwarranted and unnecessary. Faced with dramatic new obstacles, which would literally be implemented overnight, SPFA along with its members and partners from the Center for the Polyurethanes Industry (CPI) contacted state legislators and the Governor’s office to stave off this bad piece of legislation. One week later the Governor took the appropriate action of vetoing the bill following a special session of the Assembly.

LOST MEMBERS YEAR-TO-DATE
SPFA has taken steps to support a Board directive to broaden our reach of communications with the industry, our partners and stakeholders. Recently, SPFA re-invested in building its social media standing by focusing upon use of Twitter and Facebook. The services allow SPFA to communicate in real time with its members on important issues that will affect them and their businesses. Additionally, to further increase the reach of SPFA, a twicemonthly electronic newsletter will begin in September 2012 to complement this publication.
Feds, CPI and Certification
SPFA will be meeting with EPA and other federal agency officials on Sept. 12 in Washington, DC to review ongoing aggressive development and planned deployment of its new SPF Industry Certification Program. This will be an opportunity for the officials to receive an overview on the program, and several subsequent weeks to review the materials and provide constructive feedback for possible inclusion. SPFA will also be presenting this new program to the polyurethane manufacturing audience of the CPI Annual Conference in Atlanta, GA on Sept. 25th. The certification program is set to be released at the 2013 SPFA Annual Convention and Expo.
