Stone Dimensions - Fall/Winter 2007 - (Page 5) StoneDimensions Volume 1 • Number 2 Published by Naylor, LLC 5950 NW 1st Place Gainesville, FL 32607 ph: 800.369.6220 • fax: 352.331.3525 From the Publishers The natural stone industry takes environmental concerns very seriously and through various studies and questionnaires, it has become abundantly clear how important these issue are to consumers, designers, and architects specifying natural stone as a building material. This is why the Marble Institute of America is actively involved with the Natural Stone Council (a collaboration of businesses and trade associations that have come together to promote the use of Genuine Stone© in commercial and residential applications). The NSC recently commissioned a study to be performed by the University of Tennessee’s Center for Clean Products, which will produce a life cycle inventory for natural stone used for all types of building. The information gathered will display how stone’s enduring life cycle makes it an ideal green building product for residences. Life cycle inventories are of vital importance to those with environmental concerns because a life-cycle inventory (LCI) helps consumers and design professionals compare the environmental impacts of one product verses another. Once this information is gathered, we intend to use it to create environmental best practices for the natural stone industry. These best practices will show businesses in the stone industry the most effective and efficient methods for “greening” their business and decreasing their business’s impact on the environment. As a project participant, I am confident that this set of best practices will be embraced by the natural stone industry and will result in a dramatic reduction of energy and water consumption. As a product of nature, natural stone is inherently earth-friendly and offers many environmentally friendly attributes including an enduring life-cycle, durability, ease of care and maintenance, and recyclability. Supporting industries that take an active approach, embrace green building and who are sensitive to environmental concerns, help consumers take the first step towards greening their own life and minimizing their impact on our environment. www.naylor.com Publishers Garen P.
