Stone Dimensions - Winter/Spring 2008 - (Page 14) the feeling and warmth of the Old World style. It is here that we find mosaics and murals at home in the quiet ambiance of a European kitchen. Mediterranean: Few materials are as tolerant and accepting as natural stone when it comes to the introduction of the bold, colorful hand-made tiles of the Mediterranean. Creamy limestone partners perfectly with cobalt blue hand painted trims and jewel toned accents. When embellishing your stone with these deeply pigmented tiles you almost feel transported to the sun drenched kitchens of France, Italy and Spain. Natural: The popularity of earthy organic interiors is on the rise. There are myriad selections available to create this rugged casual look. Choose stones such as limestone, travertine or slate that have been given a heavy relief by way of a chiseled edge or split face to instill an unmatched textural quality on your splash. Whimsical: Shape and color go hand in hand when whimsy is the goal. Alternating contrasting colors in rhomboids or diamonds offers a distinctive harlequin effect as does placing tiles in a checkerboard pattern. Hand made ceramic tiles abound in fanciful colors and like most materials, blend wonderfully with stone. Daring individuals may choose to introduce unique collections of items into their design such as metal buttons, charms or even seashells. No particular style in mind? Try stimulating your creative energies by exploring your favorite design publications or local specialty tile shops and see what styles appeal to you. Next, choose a color palette that pleases your eye. Combine the two, begin to sketch, play, mix and match and soon you will discover that elusive style that says “This is just what I’ve been looking for!” To learn more, look for the author’s books “STONE” and “TILE STYLE” (Harry N.
