TACA Conveyor - Winter 2007 - (Page 26) MEMBER NEWS Vulcan Materials Funshoot Reaches $1 Million Milestone to Benefit the Cancer Therapy & Research Center Construction industry leader “builds framework” to conquer cancer T he 14th Annual Vulcan Materials Funshoot to benefit the Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC) reached a milestone by raising more than $1 million since the event was established in 1994. The Funshoot was held Saturday, September 8, at the National Shooting Complex. This year’s event raised nearly $200,000, which is the most ever raised in a single year’s event. One hundred percent of the net proceeds from the event will assist CTRC, South Texas’ only cancer center to be designated as a site of excellence by the National Cancer Institute in its mission to conquer cancer through research, prevention, and treatment. This year’s event was dedicated to the memory of Tom Mathews, a former employee and founding member of the Funshoot, who lost his four-year battle with cancer on May 26, 2007. “Vulcan Materials Company is very proud to support the continuing efforts at the Cancer Therapy & Research Center. This year’s event is extremely special to us, as cancer has touched the Vulcan family on a personal level,” said J. Thomas Hill, president of Vulcan Materials. Throughout the past 14 years, the $1 million raised to benefit CTRC helped 26 TACA Conveyor • Winter 2007 fund cancer screenings and education and outreach programs. “CTRC is fortunate to have Vulcan Materials as a community partner, and we greatly appreciate all of their efforts to make this event a success year after year,” said Karen K.
