Association Leadership - March/April 2008 - (Page 41) community spotlight Affiliate Member My Name: Jancy Darling Job Title: President, Receptionist, Accountant, Director of Sales… selfemployment brings many job titles Place of Employment: Golf Links & Golftournamentshop.com Years in the Association Market: 10 Childhood ambition: I dreamed about being a broadcast journalist. I actually received my bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism. Not such a good career choice for someone whose biggest fear is public speaking! First job: At 13 I was a hostess at Jim’s Diner in Oak Hill. I had to fib about my age to get the job. I can’t believe I just put this little secret into print! Inspiration: I am a person who roots for the little guy or underdog to be victorious. I love to see people who are able to overcome great adversity and turn a negative into a positive. Fondest memory: Hanging out at my grandparents’ house in Houston. They always took me to the beauty shop, shopping and, of course, to Luby’s for dinner. Favorite movie or book: “What the Bleep Do We Know.” It is a movie that talks about quantum physics and the law of attraction. I truly believe you get back what you put out there. Indulgence: Beer and chips and hot sauce. I am true Texan. Perfect day: On the beach in Mexico with my boyfriend. My life… is fun. I have a supportive and loving family, close friends, an incredible boyfriend and a big orange cat named Leon. What else could you ask for? My profession… is really cool. I have been able to take my hobby and turn it into a job. I really like being self-employed because I can always fly by the seat of my pants and make changes to my business instantly. Everyone is under the impression that I get to play golf every day. Unfortunately this is not the case. Actually the opposite is true. Executive Member My Name: Anne Glasgow Job Title: Executive Director Place of Employment: Texas Society of Professional Surveyors Years in the Association Market: 28 Childhood ambition: To read every book in the library. I still haven’t quite made it. First job: Besides mowing the lawn at home it would have been working in a medical records department in a hospital in Springfield, Mo. Inspiration: Faith, hope and charity. Fondest memory: April 1, 2000, our wedding day shared with a few good friends and family. Favorite movie or book: The list of favorite books is way too long to itemize, but “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett is my best childhood reading memory. “Possession” by A.S. Byatt and anything by Charles Dickens will suffice for adult favorites. Indulgence: Travel and fine dining. Proudest moment: In 2004 I trained to walk a marathon. After 6 hours, 47 minutes and 19 seconds I crossed the finish line tired, sore and very proud of the accomplishment. Additionally, I raised more than $5,000 to benefit the American Stroke Association and I was humbled to walk symbolically for the stroke heroes whose names were printed on my singlet. Perfect day: Our family spent this New Year’s in a cabin near Mt. Rainier, and between days playing in the snow with my step-kids, grandkids and husband, or quiet times reading and watching the snow fall, it was all pretty idyllic. My life…has been rich with good friends, great jobs and experiences that I would have never imagined. I can’t even guess what the future holds, but I look forward to finding out. My profession… is a huge part of who I am. I came to Texas from the National Society of Professional Surveyors in Washington, D.C., so I’ve been working with surveyors since 1981 and I know members of this profession from all over the country. It has been challenging, rewarding, the source of a number of great adventures and countless wonderful memories. ◆ March/April 2008 | Association LEADERSHIP 41 http://Golftournamentshop.com
