Association Leadership - May/June 2008 - (Page 26) case study Association “P” is for his monthÕs Association Leadership respondents Ð Anita Bradberry, Doug McMurry and Kathleen Quill Ð were asked to match the letters in the word ÒpresidentÓ to the job duties of a typical association president. What a great assignment! As CEO of the Texas Association for Home Care Inc. for the past 18 years, our organization grew from a membership of 300 to 1,200, reduced to 400 and is now back up to more than 1,100. Our staff went from two to 16, reduced to six and is now back up to 15. I weathered several periods of extreme tension between factions of the membership and board. An extreme, retroactive change in Medicare reimbursement wiped out two-thirds of our industry in 1998-2000. As part of studying for the CAE exam, I have been Anita Bradberry concentrating on the knowledge part of being a successful Texas Association for Home Care Inc. CEO. Examining the required skill set has made me realize there are certain things you must have from day one in order to lead, and most of th those cannot be taught. They have to come from within. The two I would like to focus on in this brief article are Purpose and Servant fo Leadership. I cannot view the CEOÕs role as just a job, and I probably could not work for just any organization. Therefo ÒPurposeÓ is a necessity Ð can I make a difference in the Therefore, world? This of course is followed closely by Òpassion,Ó because when you know you are follow fulÞlling your purpose you are passionate about it. People around you are also passionate about what they do to contribute. In the home-care industry, most of our members are contri heavily dependent upon government funding (Medicare/Medicaid) and they are licensed/ regulated. Therefore, we must have patience and persistence to obtain favorable or prevent unfavorable changes. Keeping ÒpurposeÓ in mind helps me to be strategic in the long run, and focused in the short run. Servant leadership is something I have practiced since becoming a CEO. However, I didnÕt know it had a name until the past several years Purpose, passion, patience, persistent, perspective Risk, responsible when I began studying it. Enthusiasm This style of leadership is Servant leader, strategic, salt/seasoning particularly conducive to Insightful, integrity, inspiration, inclusive association leadership, given Determined, diplomacy, discipline of self the various persons you must Excellence serve. Ten principles of servant Network leadership are listening, Trust, team-builder empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment and community. ÒLife @ WorkÓ and ÒTalent is Never EnoughÓ by John Maxwell are two books I read recently that have integrated my spiritual life with my work life. A new concept called ÒServant-Leader XY FrameworkÓ is also having a positive effect in helping me to build relationships and in coaching others.
