Things we all need to know At your next staff meeting, have one person give a quick ﬁveminute presentation (with instructional handouts) on how to do one of their job tasks or procedures. This is a great opportunity for all staff to be crosstrained on the essentials. A bit of a stretch Having a stressful day at work? TSAE’s Alaina Yepez uses Google to ﬁnd simple yoga stretches that can be done at your desk. Taking ﬁve minutes to release tension in body and mind can make the rest of the day smoother and more productive. Staff recognition TSAE has a “Wally of the Month” award. Wally’s is a local hamburger restaurant that makes great milkshakes, called “Wallybangers.” Employees recognize extra effort by fellow staffers by nominating them for the Wally of the Month. Ballots are submitted in a specially decorated Wally Box. The winner is announced monthly and gets a choice of Wallybanger milkshake. Plus, they get their name listed on the “Wally of Fame.” Stress relief As part of its wellness program Texas Library Association provides massages and other spa services up to $75 for staff. The services must be used within a speciﬁed time period – usually a week or two prior to conference through a week after conference. A receipt must be submitted detailing the services in order to receive reimbursement. The purpose is to help alleviate some of the stress staff members experience during conference season. Midday movies Once per month, the Texas Society of Professional Surveyors takes turns choosing a movie to share with staff and peers. They take a long break, turn the phones on auto-answer and watch a movie while eating brown-bag lunch. It was fun and they were exposed to movies that they had neither seen nor heard of. A great centerpiece idea from the Austin CVB – the program is printed on the enlarged placards, glued at the edges to stand in the center of the table. Easy to see and saves on paper. Next time you need a great idea in Austin, do some brainstorming with your team on the “conference bike.” The seven-seater bike was great fun, and after a 45-minute ride the TSAE staff had all kinds of ideas!
