The New Chairman “There’s no question we’re among the top ﬁve in the country, regardless of what measure you’re using,” said Boon, who secured his degrees in 1969 and 1972, then returned to the Austin-based association in 1994. “We’re trying to capitalize on the memories people had while they were students. “Most of the people who’ve gone to school here had good experiences here, and that’s what creates the foundation for good memories 10, 20, 30 and 40 years later. We’re one of the largest universities in the country, and there are a lot of things for the alumni to take pride in.” Boon, now 60, began a career in insurance administration while a junior at UT. He was a partner in the BoonChapman Agency in Austin until 1982, when he sold his interest and moved to Chicago as head of ofﬁce for a Marsh & McLennan subsidiary. He left Marsh to become president of Association Consultants Inc., which specialized in insurance programs for alumni associations and put him in contact with some of the top alumni groups in the country, before he returned to his home state and his alma mater in 1994. Boon initially joined the Texas Society of Association Executives in 1970 as an afﬁliate member, and then rejoined as an executive member when he took over Texas Exes 13 years ago. He’ll begin a one-year term as TSAE chairman at the association’s annual conference and education meeting in September. “I would hope to be described as someone who takes a long-term view and consistently uses that as a benchmark for things to do day to day while keeping the group on a path. I want to be fair and make sure I maintain the mindset that I never ask anyone to do anything that I wouldn’t do myself.” “I had clients who were members of TSAE back then and it was clearly a good networking and development opportunity for me. Absolutely,” he said. “For starters, there’s the common denominator of interest among the members in managing associations, and the opportunities for training. “We try to provide a number of those sorts of opportunities, and we really run the whole gamut within the TSAE membership. There are professional and trade associations and all sorts of other afﬁliate members who are great resources.
