Association Leadership - September/October 2007 - (Page 15) The New Chairman trigger increased conversation within the membership on the importance of racial and ethnic diversity in association management positions. Overall, the state is among the most diverse in the nation in terms of its distinct minority groups, a proliferation Boon said will create a scenario within a decade where no specific group can claim a statistical majority of the population. The new chairman also hopes to strengthen and streamline the association’s relationship with ASAE by eliminating duplicative services, while additionally also stressing the importance of a well-educated populace on the strength of the state’s economy. “I’m not naïve enough to believe that in a single year I can change everything, but what I am hoping for is to generate more interest and awareness of these topics and to create a healthy dialogue for our members,” he said. “I have the opportunity to have a pulpit for a year where I can talk about all three things. And if I can keep putting them in front of our people and keep making a point of stressing a dialogue, then we’ll have the opportunity to create a shared focus.” Boon also intends to capitalize on existing strengths of the association – namely a great staff, its quality infrastructure and board of directors – while pointing the latter’s focus more toward strategic initiatives rather than mundane day-to-day affairs. And as for his legacy, he hopes it’ll be reflective of his aim toward calm and steady leadership. “I’d like to see the staff as a whole more empowered to act on tactical issues and to have the board evolve into more strategic roles, he said. “I don’t want them worrying unnecessarily about dayto-day affairs. That’s not what they’re there for. “I would hope to be described as someone who takes a long-term “There are professional and trade associations and all sorts of other affiliate members (in TSAE) who are great resources. We’re a diverse group in that way and we hope to continue to attract a large crosssection of members.” view and consistently uses that as a benchmark for things to do day to day while keeping the group on a path. I want to be fair and make sure I maintain the mindset that I never ask anyone to do anything that I wouldn’t do myself.” ◆ LIVE MUSIC CAPITAL OF THE WORLD® LIKE NO ONE’S WATCHING Great breaks make any meeting easier to swallow.
