For starters, The Washington Redskins were in the Super Bowl, Notre Dame and Alabama were the kings of college football, the Godfather won an Oscar, and both LexisNexis and Fed Ex were just getting started. But there’s another significant moment that took place 35 years ago this April. On April 3, 1973, the first ever cellular phone call was completed. This “call for the ages” was made by an engineer at Motorola. His name is Marty Cooper. And while many of us would probably have used this historic moment to call our mom, or dad, our spouse, or kids, Marty took a different route. Marty chose to use his portable cellular phone to call his chief competitor at Bell Laboratories to tell him that Motorola had beaten him to the punch. And with that call 35 years ago, competition in the wireless industry was born. From the industry’s very beginning, entreprenuers, engineers, scientists, and businessmen and women have constantly pushed the technological envelope to provide a changing nation and world with the mobile products and services they want and need. Without this intense race among competitors, there simply wouldn’t be the rapid change and evolution necessary to potentially celebrate 2008 as the year of the cell phone. So, why are wireless companies constantly changing, constantly upgrading, and constantly putting forward new products and services? Because they have no other choice. Consumers are in charge, and through their purchases they decide who wins and who loses in the wireless race. And that’s exactly the way it should be. If there ever was an industry that fully appreciates the challenge “What have you done for me lately,” it is the wireless industry. In fact, they just don’t appreciate it, they thrive on it. So as we all enjoy the warm breezes of spring, let’s not forget that 35 years ago a young man named Marty Cooper started the wireless revolution, and in doing so he began a race for wireless consumer satisfaction that rages on to this day.
