Wireless Wave - Spring 2008 - (Page 12) Pryor Approval U nited States Senator Mark Pryor (D-AR) believes wireless communication is the wave of the future in which all Americans will have equal access to information and technology to make their lives more productive and efficient. Senator Pryor advocates that national standards for the wireless industry are the best way to ensure the brightest communications opportunities for consumers and has proposed legislation (S 2171, Uniform Wireless Consumer Protection Act) to accomplish that. Senator Pryor recently discussed his proposed legislation and other matters of industry interest with Wireless Wave. Wave: I’d like to start by talking about the consumer protection legislation you’ve introduced. What would you consider to be its key components? SEN PRYOR: I believe it makes sense to set a national standard for consumeroriented issues so that everybody understands the rules of the game. Consumers and carriers should have one set of rules to go by so everybody knows what to expect, no matter where you are. I’m highly motivated to pass legislation that will help us all communicate even better in the future. We’re on the move now more than ever, going all kinds of places and crossing jurisdictions, and using different companies’ networks while we do that. At the same time, my colleagues and I hear some complaints about various billing practices or contracts. This is an effort to try and clean that up and hopefully allow the industry to be more efficient while providing security to consumers. I want something consumer groups and the industry are comfortable with and something that will be good for everybody. I think that’s possible and would be a win-win. W ir e l e s s W a v e 12
