Wireless Wave - Spring 2008 - (Page 39) ▼ ▼ LEGS, REGS, AND WIRELESS works every year, and give Americans access to more than 600 types of wireless devices including digital cameras and camcorders, Internet access devices, and video and television receivers. Largent also urged Congress to finish the job it began in 1993 by extending the national wireless framework to include consumer protection standards, as part of a consistent and uniform regulatory landscape across all 50 states. Largent maintained that such an environment provides consumers and the industry with consistency and certainty that will maximize the many benefits of using wireless services and products. Largent reaffirmed CTIA’s and the industry’s commitment to work with the Subcommittee to craft a policy that serves the needs of consumers and carriers alike. Largent Addresses NARUC CTIA President and CEO Steve Largent addressed the NARUC Telecommunications Committee, on February 19, 2008 at the NARUC winter meeting. Largent shared his belief with the group that the wireless industry is continually responding to consumer needs and demands, citing several recent examples of contract adjustments, such as prorated early termination fees and more flexibility in changing contract terms. Largent also pointed out the carriers’ willingness to open up their networks to third-party software developers, and cited numerous statistics reflecting the industry’s vast and growing contribution to the country’s economic vitality. A key aspect of Largent’s speech touched on the industry’s support of a national framework of wireless regulation, and how such a framework developed in a collaborative manner with state and federal policymakers will ultimately benefit consumers.
